Save the date for our first Battery Live Talk in 2024. This time, we are happy to welcome José Miguel Benavente, Vice-president of the Chilean Economic Development Agency (CORFO) and Michael Schmidt, Senior Research Associate, German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA) on the panel.
Don't miss out on this panel discussion and join us to dive into the topic together with our colleagues Sebastian Abel and Mischa Bechberger (VDI/VDE-IT) and engage with experts in the field.

What will be addressed?

  • What are possibilities and challenges of new lithium supply opportunities for the German and European lithium demand?
  • How can the expected strong increase of European lithium demand be secured by new reliable supply partnerships, e.g. with suppliers from Chile?
  • How can new European lithium mining projects contribute to a stronger self-supply with the most important LiB raw material?

The EU's ambition to become a climate-neutral economy by 2050 depends heavily on reliable, secure and resilient access to critical raw materials. This especially applies to lithium. Mostly driven by the strong uptake of full-electric vehicles in Europe, demand for lithium is expected to multiply by 12 until 2030 and by 21 until 2050, as compared to 2020 levels. But until now, Europe is nearly completely relying on lithium imports - both for lithium ore/brine and refined lithium. With the new Critical Raw Material Act (CRMA), the EU wants to reach at least 10% of critical raw materials to be mined and 40% to be processed domestically by 2030 – including lithium.

Having in mind the boost in lithium demand and the yet very high import dependency – how can the ambitious goals set by the EU be reached? Don't miss out on this panel discussion and join us to dive into the topic together.
