Solid-state battery (SSB) technology is still on the horizon, but momentum is building. In our upcoming session, we’ll take a closer look at who is actively working on SSBs today and what challenges still stand in the way of large-scale commercialization.

SSBs using polymer electrolytes are generally easier to adapt for mass production, as the manufacturing processes for thin polymer films are already well-established. In contrast, oxide-based electrolytes pose greater challenges due to the complexity of producing thin ceramic layers, which require high-temperature sintering and are more difficult to scale. Sulfide-based electrolytes fall somewhere in between in terms of manufacturing complexity and scalability.

All three materials are still considered in the research and industrial adoption of SSB. And there mostly won´t be a clear winner. Because the research is application focused and each material has its benefits and also downsides.

Join us as we explore the current state of solid-state batteries and ask.

What will be addressed?:

1. Who are the key players pushing SSB development forward right now?

2. What are the main technological and economic hurdles to overcome?

3. How realistic are current production timelines and expectations?

This discussion format is free of charge and opens a channel for critical reflection on important questions that arise within the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) European Battery Innovation.

The event is organised by the accompanying research of the IPCEI EuBatIn, managed by VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
