In this Battery Live Talk we will discuss insights on overcoming barriers to scaling bidirectional charging in Europe, the critical role of data points, and future policy needs. We will cover how data-sharing frameworks in the energy sector are being developed, particularly within the context of bidirectional charging and EU digitalisation policies.

For this, we look forward to welcoming Alexander Gaytandjiev, Senior Interim Manager at E.ON Group Innovation GmbH and Stavros Stamatoukos, Policy Officer Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence of the European Commission Directorate-General for Energy as our guests.

What will be discussed?

  • What are the key take aways from the Joint Report by the “Coalition of the Willing on Bidirectional Charging”?
  • What is the Subgroup “Data for Energy” within the Smart Energy Expert Group of the European Commission? How does it contribute to the build-up of the European framework for sharing energy-related data?
  • Why are these initiatives relevant for the battery community?

The discussion is based on a Joint Report, developed by 80 experts from around 60 companies and organisations within a “Coalition of the Willing on Bidirectional Charging”. Within the coalition's European Working Groups “Car Charging and Aggregators” and “Energy and Grid Topics” key barriers to scaling bidirectional charging in Europe were identified. These include challenges like establishing consumer incentives, harmonising technical standards, and ensuring seamless data transfer to enable the integration of mobility into the energy sector. The discussion will also highlight how key data points will underpin the technical and economic viability of bidirectional charging.

Additionally, we will explore the newly established subgroup “Data for Energy” (D4E) of the Smart Energy Expert Group of the European Commission that aims to facilitate energy-related data exchange and support the development of a common European data space for the energy sector. Through a joint work programme with the Sustainable Transport Forum, D4E ensures the alignment of energy and mobility data spaces, supporting cross-sectoral services and system integration.

For the battery community, these initiatives are highly relevant. The intersection lies in the shared need for interoperable data systems. In both cases the transfer of data must be non-discriminatory and seamless to unlock full potential. Furthermore, the framework set by D4E will help shape policies that ensure consistent data flows across energy value chains — offering substantial benefits to both consumers and the electricity grid. These efforts are crucial for achieving the European Green Deal and digitalisation goals.
